Volunteering with OPAL

Over the past 10 years, OPAL has relied on many key people to support the service. More recently, the recruitment of voluntary OPAL Advisers has been a vital addition, in answering enquiries on both phone and via email.

The OPAL Team have been very fortunate to meet some wonderful people who ultimately donate their time to support people in their own communities. And the first volunteer, John, has shared some details of his role below.

Please contact Ronnie at OPAL for more information about volunteering opportunities.

Hi there, my name is John and I am a volunteer with OPAL. My role is to help answer the many telephone/email enquiries that come to our service.

I really enjoy the work because of the amazing variety of questions we are asked. We act as a sign posting service, not directly resolving problems but finding someone who can.

We often refer to the various third sector organisations and work closely with voluntary groups around East Dunbartonshire.

Some enquiries are straight forward but sometimes we deal with more complex requests which involves a bit of investigation, by either online research or by phoning various local contacts for guidance. The job is never boring.

I am now retired from daily working but volunteering with OPAL helps keep my mind active and gives me plenty to talk about when I go home to my ever patient wife.
